Visitation at the UZA
To ensure that everything goes smoothly and safely, prepare your visit well. Please take the necessary precautions and respect the rules.
Visitors
Visiting hours:
- Monday to Friday: 4 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.
- Weekends/parties and bridge days: 3 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.
Are you staying in a shared hospital room? Plan your visits in consultation with your roommate to limit the number of visitors so that a maximum of two visitors per patient are in the room at the same time.
One regular visitor per day is possible for patients with corona, but always in consultation with the attending physician and/or nurses of the service.

Companions
- Patients who come for consultation may bring two companions.
- At the emergency department you can only bring one companion. Children (<16 years old) can bring up to two companions.
- Are you coming for a (day) admission? If necessary, one supervisor can accompany you to the nursing ward or service where you have an appointment. Afterwards we ask your company to go back home. At the surgical and internist day hospital ( departments A3 and B3), your companion/carer can stay with you at all times.
General rules for visiting
Guidelines for visitors
- As a visitor/guide you enter through the main entrance of the UZA.
- A mouth mask is recommended for vulnerable patients and people with symptoms of a cold or other respiratory infection. Your healthcare provider can always ask you to put on a mouth mask.
- Always keep 1.5 metres’ distance, also in the room.
- Disinfect your hands regularly, especially upon entering and leaving the room.
- Do not use the toilet in the room. Use one of the public toilets in the hospital (e.g. in the entry hall).
Important
- Were you recently in a risk area? (previous 14 days)
- And/or did you have contact with a person (potentially) infected with COVID-19?
- And/or are you showing any COVID-19 symptoms?
Then postpone your visit to the UZA to protect your loved ones and other patients.
Additional and alternative visiting rules
Maternity
- Partner is welcome any time. If the partner is not present, an extra (designated) person is welcome at all times.
- The new baby's brothers and sisters (< age 16) are also welcome any time (under supervision of the partner or designated person).
- Two other visitors are welcome from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Paediatrics

Both parents/guardians are welcome throughout the day. One parent may stay overnight.

If one parent can't visit during the day, an additional (designated) person is welcome from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Siblings and other visitors are welcome every day from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. (accompanied by a parent).
Neonatology
- Both parents/guardians are welcome any time. If only 1 parent/guardian is present, an additional (designated) person is welcome at all times.
- During the visiting hours (weekdays: 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. and weekends/public holidays: 3:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m):
- The new baby's brothers and sisters (< age 16) are welcome under supervision of a parent or guardian.
- Two other visitors are welcome.
Recovery room
- Patients who return to their hospital room on the day of their surgery can receive visitors there. No visitors are allowed in the recovery room.
- Patients who stay overnight in the recovery room after their surgery can receive two visitors during visiting hours (6.30pm to 7pm).
- For children, one parent/guide can come to the recovery room. You can wait in the recovery waiting area (route 161) during surgery. The nurse will pick you up here when your child arrives at the recovery room.
Intensive care
- Adult Intensive Care Unit: two visitors per day allowed by appointment (telephone) with the nurse in charge. You can visit during one of the following time slots: 12h30 - 14h and 17h - 20h. Please limit your visiting time to a maximum of 1 hour. Exceptions are possible in consultation with the treating team.
- Both parents are welcome at any time for children in intensive care (INZO4 / PICU). In addition, two other visitors per day are welcome after making an appointment (by telephone) with the nurse in charge. You can visit during one of the following time slots: 12h30 - 14h and 17h - 20h. Please limit your visiting time to a maximum of 1 hour. Exceptions are possible in consultation with the treating team.
Urgent visits
- If visits cannot be postponed, contact the nursing unit where the patient is staying. We will then look for the most suitable option together.
Last moments with your loved ones & greeting
- One relative can stay the night to spend his/her last moments with a patient.
- In addition to the general visiting hours, a short farewell visit of important relatives (partner, parents, children or in exceptional cases a close friend) is allowed once. Max. 2 people at the same time (exception intensive care: 4 people).
Greeting: nursing unit/intensieve care
Greeting at the nursing unit/intensive care is possible in consultation with the concerned department and the attending physician (possible up to 2 hours after death).
- Nursing unit: a maximum of 2 people at the same time
- Intensive care: up to 4 people at the same time
Greeting: morgue
As a relative, you can come to the morgue to have one final greeting at the following moments, only after making an appointment by telephone (+32 3 821 49 39):
- Monday to Friday: from 2 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.
- Saturday: from 9 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
- Sundays and holidays: from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
On the day of your appointment, report to the reception desk in the entrance hall and from there you will be accompanied by a mortuary employee (in groups of no more than 2 people).
Stay connected
Staying connected remains essential. Fortunately, there are other ways to keep in touch with your loved one and to support them.
For example, you can pay each other a virtual visit via Skype, FaceTime or the like. We have recently welcomed 4 new robot colleagues to the wards that enable patients to make video calls with their family and friends.
